Over time the band’s style has ranged from quirky and offbeat to creating simple, brilliant, hardcore dance floor anthems, not just eccentric little pop songs. In recent years this London band, formed in 2000 in Putney, London, has deepened their style from goofy youngsters, to creators of thoughtful, mellow R&B influenced pop slow dance pieces like One Life Stand, and other smart pop songs.
Hot Chip’s live performances are known for the bands ability to improvise and innovate using their studio work.
The band consists of Owen Clarke, Alexis Taylor, Joe Goddard, Al Doyle, and Felix Martin. Since 2000 they have put out four albums, with each, for the most part, getting a fair amount of acclaim from the critics.
The Albums
Hot Chip’s first album was Coming on Strong released in 2004 in the UK and in 2005 in the US. This album received middling reviews and was considered “safe” pop music. The Warning was released in 2006 after the band had time to sign with EMI and also to build a reputation and a following. The album featured what is arguably Hot Chip’s most widely known song, Over and Over, destined to be one of the era's most beloved dance classics. They scored another hit with their next album Made in the Dark, which featured another very popular earworm, Ready for the Floor. Their fourth and most recent album was released in 2010, called One Life Stand, the title track of which is a mellow, pure pop love-song as it is a dance floor anthem.
