A short biography of Armin Van Buuren

Like fellow Dutchman DJ Tiesto (Tijs Michael Verwest), Armin Van Buuren has achieved worldwide success at an early age. The 35-year-old DJ, producer and radio show host has released four albums and earned numerous awards including The Golden Harp, which is the highest honor possible for Dutch artists. His radio show, A State of Trance, is thought to be one of the most popular radio shows in the world. He has hosted the show for about 11 years. Van Buuren’s first album was titled 76 and was released in 2003, and was followed in 2005 by Shivers, then came Imagine in 2008, after which came Mirage in 2010. Apart from his albums, Van Buuren puts out popular annual mixes of trance tracks.

A few years ago the Dutchman names Tijs Michael Verwest was, according to him, DJing in clubs with around a hundred people, but these days, he is selling out arenas, with tickets to his shows going for almost $60 each. He has charged as much as $250,000 for a performance and has recently signed a deal to DJ at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas worth $2 million. His name on stage is DJ Tiesto and he is one of the more highly regarded and financially successful DJs in the business.

 

Electronic dance music from Europe has become a trend in the US and the result has been a booming live concert scene generating tens of millions of dollars for the performers. The audience is mainly teenagers and young adults in their early to mid twenties. Tiesto, who is in his mid-forties, has his own private jet and a number of houses around the world as a result of the recent trendiness of his genre.

Benny Benassi first made it big with his hit song Satisfaction, with which he made his name around the world in 2002. Satisfaction was not his first hit, however, as the year before, Benassi had gotten to the top of the Italian and UK charts with the song “I Feel So Fine” which he released under the name KMC. The native of Reggio Emilia, Italy says that he started listening to dance music when he was 15 years old and that his work is greatly influenced by electronica from the 1980s. Benassi got started in music DJing with his cousin Alle and as a part of the Off Limits team.

 

Benassi is in great demand as a remixer. His criteria for choosing to do a remix? Benassi says that first, he has to like the artist and the track, then he has to be sure that he can do something good with the song. Benassi has worked artists like Outkast, Iggy Pop, Public Enemy and Goldfrapp.

 

He has created five albums thus far:

  • His first album, Hypnotica, was released 2003 and featured The Biz, a vocal duo with which Benassi has often collaborated. The Biz consists of Paul French and Violeta Claudia. Hypnotica featured Benassi’s signature song, Satisfaction.
